Chundu Island

Victoria Falls, Zambezi National Park

Perhaps Chundu’s best asset is its location. Chundu Island is located in the heart of the Zambezi National Park, only 21km upstream from Zimbabwe’s majestic Victoria Falls.

The island is superbly positioned on the Zambezi River and only accessible by boat.  From here guests can experience Africa in its purest state. It is serene and beautiful, yet at the same time, guests have the opportunity to experience the best Zimbabwe has to offer. Peace and tranquility with opportunities for thrill seeking and adventure.

After the hustle and bustle of Vic Falls, a town that caters to both the adrenaline junkies and the curious, Chundu allows you to indulge in a deliciously chilled island life.  The exclusive lodge has sole access to this beautiful 1.4km long island on the mighty Zambezi River.

The lodge is constructed in the shade of magnificent riverine trees, blending with nature.  There are 6 spacious suites with wide vistas over the river into the Zambezi National Park and 2 family suites overlooking the banks of the river towards the Zambian side.

From Chundu Island there is a lot to do both on the water and on land:  Glorious sunset cruises with snacks and cocktails, the contrasting thrill and peace of canoeing on the river, fun fishing, exciting game drives, birding and bush walks in the Zambezi National Park to mention a few.   All this, under the direction and care of professional and experienced guides.

Chundu Island is a child-friendly destination.  There are, however, some restrictions on activities.  The  minimum age for canoeing activities is 10, and children aged between 10 and 16 need to be accompanied by a parent. Similarly, the minimum age for safari walks is 12, and those between 12 and 16 need to have a parent with them.

Chundu Island is usually accessed via a vehicle transfer through the Zambezi National Park, with a short "hop" by boat across to the island. Exciting jet boat transfers from a jetty in Vic Falls either to or from the island are available at an additional fee.

We just returned from Chundu island for a 5 night stay on a family break. It was a great experience and would definitely recommend to anyone. We were met by Johannes at the Zambezi National park gate. The drive to Chundu is like a game drive on its own as we saw a lot of animals on the way including a large herd of elephants with young ones. It was a great experience to see them up close. The Island itself was an out of this world experience and it is exactly as in the pictures. You feel like you have the island to yourself which was great for us trying to break away from the city. The rooms were clean and are made out of canvas, which means you hear hippos breathing and making noises right outside your room at night. We also witnessed a group of elephants which swam across to graze on the island. It was a scary thought to know there are elephants on the island but we were safely escorted to the room after dinner every night and were assured that the elephants would leave the island in a day or so, which they did in a day. It was just surreal to hear them at night close to the room and see their footprints outside our room in the morning. The food was delicious. The portions were big especially for kids. You are never hungry as there is breakfast, lunch, high tea, snacks and dinner. The activities were well organized and it was great that we went as a family (2 adults and 3 kids) alone for all activities (game drives, river cruise and sunset cruise). We did not participate in fishing, canoeing and island walk as it had age limits above our kids age and also, we were not really interested, but it was offered for the adults. I would highly recommend this to anyone as the river was so relaxing and beautiful. The only suggestion I have is for the Wi-Fi to reach the rooms to offer guest privacy who would like to contact home via WhatsApp calls while on holiday as currently the Wi-Fi is only at the reception area. A big thank you to the staff at Chundu Island

Arriving at Chundu island on the paddle boat after a game drive through Zambezi National Park, from Vic Falls is the start of a wonderful experience. Set in the Zambezi river, the lodge overlooks white sands, fringed with green reeds and pools of water and the deck area is shaded by beautiful old trees. The individual rooms/cabins are tastefully and thoughtfully designed with everything you could need for a comfortable stay and a terrace with private view of the river. The bed was huge and so comfortable, and there are tea and coffee making facilities and a well stocked fridge. Durdley and his team are so friendly and helpful, our every need catered for, including a fabulous anniversary meal under the stars next to the fire. Gerald, our guide, was brilliant - energetic and entertaining - and we had some great game viewing, as well as sunset and sunrise cruises which were stunning. It is impossible not to relax at Chundu and I didn't want to leave.

Luxury but with a lot of nature. Location is the best from early morning sunrise to the fabulous sunsets. We managed to see game but it wasn't plentiful due to recent rains making less dependency on river water. But did see a leopard really close on our last day. Blessed had real hawk eyes and spotted everything out there! He is extremely knowledgeable especially spotting the birds. Staff at Chundu were very nice and nothing was too much trouble. We had 4 wonderful nights there. Highly recommend!
